Realistic Optimism Is Strategic Optimism

“Optimism is not a denial of the current state. It’s a belief that the future is bright,

but it accepts current darkness.” – Simon Sinek

As we focus on attitudes this month, we need to be aware that the way we view problems and achieve growth is strongly impacted by the way we look at the world. This week’s theme – realistic optimism – is one way we can look at the challenges of the present and the potential of the future to help us solve our personal problems, learn from our mistakes, and build on our opportunities for growth. In other words, it allows us to be resilient.

But this week’s topic raises a key distinction that may be difficult to understand for some. The difficulty arises when realistic optimism is confused with unrealistic optimism or what is also known as “toxic positivity.” While realistic optimism allows us to see reality as it is, evaluate possible outcomes, and develop strategies for growth, unrealistic optimism is the failure to recognize anything negative and the often unproductive attitude of always “looking on the bright side.”

Realistic optimism is optimism with a plan. In our research for this week, we found this great podcast from Blue Summit Supplies in which Grace and Shannon note that realistic optimism is really STRATEGIC optimism. And setting SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timely) based on realistic optimism allows people “to be hopeful for the future while maintaining realistic expectations with specific parameters around how the goal will be achieved.”

They also note that it’s all about believing in yourself. Instead of relying on an attitude of unrealistic positivity that everything will just naturally work out in the end, you draw on your own abilities and your own confidence. “You are optimistic that because of your own skill set and your resources, that no matter how challenging it gets, you CAN overcome it. … Even with the bad days, you WILL overcome it and can be successful.”

Another great source on this topic is Simon Sinek, who says, “Optimism is different from positivity. And optimism is not naïve either. Optimism accepts the truth of reality and looks forward to a brighter future. Optimism is the foundation of hope. And hope keeps us moving forward. There is a light at the end of this tunnel, and we will get there ... together.” Check out this short video for more from Simon.

Putting all of this in terms of our mission at Courage to Caregivers, realistic optimism is another tool that you can use to empower YOU. I believe that your caregiver tool box contains all the tools you need to succeed. I believe in YOU - and I hope you believe in you, too.
