National Suicide Prevention Week
We interrupt our regularly scheduled back-to-school series to address suicide prevention. After all, it’s National Suicide Prevention Week.
I have facilitated many a conversation with our board around the fact that Courage to Caregivers is NOT an organization focused on suicide. And yet, with our mission “to provide hope, support, and courage to caregivers and loved ones of those with mental illness”, suicide (ideation and prevention) is unfortunately a part of many caregiver’s stories.
Most of you know, suicide is, unfortunately, a part of my story of supporting my brother through his journey with depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
As our family has come to understand (and wrestle with) the fact that suicide is preventable – it has left us with many feelings including immense guilt. Why did he call the first time and not the last?
What makes suicide preventable? This resource is one of the best I’ve read to help us to understand.
Know the risk factors
Know the warning signs
We can all take action – start a conversation
Concerned for someone you love? Tell them. Research has proven, you will never give the idea for suicide to someone – in fact in most cases they’re relieved and it can be an important first step. Talking about suicide is one of the ways that makes it preventable .. “one conversation could save a life”.
Remember, “most people who are suicidal don’t really want their lives to end – they just want the pain to end. The understanding, support, and hope that you offer can be their most important lifeline.”
Feeling alone or confused? I’m always here to listen, and we’re about to launch our One-to-One Caregiver Support pilot program – message or call me to get more information!
If you are currently experiencing a crisis, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741-741.
I will continue to talk about suicide, because I believe that by sharing my story, I will bring hope and healing to others. Remember, you are never alone.
